2014 Mass Rivals guard Kaleb Joseph garnering high-major offers, including Maryland

Mark Turgeon

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.--College coaches sat packed along the sideline yesterday for a game between the Mass Rivals and Rise Academy at Hoop Group’s Summer Classic East.

The main draw was 2014 Top 5 player Noah Vonleh, the 6-8 forward from Massachusetts, but Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon had his eye on another prospect—Top 60 point guard Kaleb Joseph.

Joseph, a 6-3, 165-pound native of Ashburnham, Mass., was impressive on Day 1 of SCE, a smart, pass-first point guard with the skills to orchestrate an offense at the high-major level.

“I definitely try to get other guys involved,” Joseph told NBCSports.com. “That’s the way you stay effective if you’re not scoring. I like making guys around me better.

“Everybody at the D-I level can score, so if I can get into the lane and create open opportunities for myself and for others, then everybody is going to be happy.”

He excelled most as a dribble penetrator, able to get into the lane and find either shooters on the perimeter or big men free on the interior, especially Vonleh around the rim.

As the orchestrator of an offense, he is careful with the basketball and limits his turnovers, but is still developing a killer scoring instinct to round out his game.

Defensively, he has shown the ability to be active on defense, especially in the half-court, though defense won’t be his biggest selling point to college coaches.

He claims offers from schools that include Boston College, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Tennessee, Maryland, and Providence, and is also drawing interest from Cincinnati, Kansas State, and others.

Geographically, the location of a school doesn’t matter to his recruitment, he says.

“I’m not going to stay close to home if there’s a great opportunity for me farther away,” Joseph said. “I’m just looking for a place I can fit in and make an impact.”
