Could we see Christian Laettner on a college sideline one day soon?

That’s definitely a possibility based on what Laettner had to say while a guest on Sirius/XM Radio’s “Beyond the Brink” show with John Feinstein and Bruce Murray.

Laettner, one of the greatest players in the history of college basketball, worked with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League this past season.

And in regards to 2012-13 the Blue Devil legend is hopeful that he’ll land a coaching position somewhere.

“I absolutely loved it. Basketball is my profession. Basketball is my passion. So it’s the thing that comes easiest to me, it’s the thing that I enjoy doing the most.

While I have some other careers and businesses and things going on, I have to rely on other people, other experts, other professionals for all those other fields that I’m doing.”

It’s safe to say that Laettner didn’t have an issue like that when it came to basketball, and that’s something that could be of use to a program.

“But in terms of basketball, and on the court, most of the time you feel like you don’t need anyone’s help or anyone’s expertise [or] advice, besides maybe Coach K who I can get in touch with very easy. So the fact that it’s my profession, my field, my passion just made it really easy, very very enjoyable.

“When you play basketball for 25 years of your life you start missing it so to get back on the court and working in the game and teaching kids - and they all respected me so much, or at least they fooled me enough to make me think that - I had a blast and absolutely loved it, even though I was away from my family and my wife for three months. And that was tough.”

Feinstein went on to ask Laettner about what he was hoping to do next season, and while there wasn’t a definitive answer as to where he’ll be coaching Laettner does want to pursue a career in coaching.

“I want to pursue a coaching career, sure,” Laettner said. “I would like to get in the big league or maybe somewhere in college and if nothing like that happens for me hopefully I can go back to the D League next fall.”

Laettner back in the college game certainly would be interesting, especially with the amount of success that he enjoyed as a player.
