Report: Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis not interested in Southern Miss job

According to Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com, Middle Tennessee head coach Kermit Davis will not pursue the job opening at Southern Mississippi and will, instead, stay put at MTSU for now.

A source told Parrish that the job at Southern Miss was Davis’, “if he wanted it,” even without a formal offer.

Davis and the Blue Raiders finished 27-7 on the season, including 14-2 in the Sun Belt, but missed the NCAA tournament.

They garnered a bid to the NIT, where they advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Minnesota.

The head coaching job at Southern Miss opened up this month when Golden Eagles coach Larry Eustachy left to take over the same position at Colorado State. He replaces Tim Miles, who left for Nebraska.

Under Eustachy in 2011-12, Southern Miss made it to the NCAA tournament, before losing to Kansas State in the Round of 64.

Parrish reports that other possible candidates to fill the opening include Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar, and former Mississippi State assistant Phil Cunningham.

The Golden Eagles could also hire from the within, perhaps promoting assistant Steve Barnes.
