Writers officially embrace The Jimmer

Kemba Walker couldn’t hold off Jimmer Mania any longer.

The BYU scoring sensation overtook Connecticut’s guard in the National Player of the Year race, according to the latest poll results conducted by AnnArbor.com’s Michael Rothstein.

Fredette was the only player named on all 590 ballots submitted, and took 37 first-place votes, more than twice as many as Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger, who’s in second. (A scoring slump has landed Walker in third.)

Might be tough to displace Fredette atop this list, too.

The nation’s leading scorer (27.2 points per game) was “held” to 25 points in the Cougars’ 90-52 win against Air Force, but as a cultural phenomenon he’s gonna be tough to beat. There’s a web site devoted to his Player of the Year candidacy, fans who go to any lengths to support him and even a music video.

Still, it’s not in the bag. Not if Nolan Smith turns in more night like last night, or if Sullinger leads Ohio State to an unbeaten season.

Those might be the only things that can stop The Jimmer.
